Pidihtos (Πηδηχτός) is a Pyrrichios that originates in the island of Kriti. Its origin is, like others, lost in the mists of time. Oftentimes, when performing this dance, the men of Kriti will perform this dance with traditional knives in the belts of their costumes.
It is in Kriti that the Kourites warriors protected the baby Zeus by performing loud Pyrrichoi with their weapons and shields. As legend has it, this sound kept the baby Zeus’ father, Kronos, from hearing him cry.
Great pride is taken in these legends today. The dance group performing this dance in the video below is named Kourites.
